Want to stream your favourite movies and TV shows but don’t have a smart TV? In this post we’ll learn how to set up Netflix on any TV in just minutes with just 2 items, your smartphone and a Google Chromecast.

When arriving at clients places of business or residence to provide IT support I am amazed at the amount of people who still want to use Netflix or another streaming service like Stan or Presto but have been unable to do so, either under the impression they have hardware limitations ie, no smart TV or lack the know how, to set it up. This blog post will address both issues in an easy to understand process.

What do you need?

First of all you can stream your favourite movies and TV shows through your smartphone but in order to send the stream to the TV you’ll need to be able to ‘cast’ it. There is an easy and inexpensive way to do this. All you need is a Google Chromecast which can be purchased from most electronics stores for under $60.
Kogan offers them here for $54 at the time that I am writing this.

Plug In, Connect, Watch

Step 1: Plug in your Chromecast device into your TV via the HDMI port. Then connect the USB power cable to your Chromecast and plug the end into either the power adapter supplied or into a USB port on the television.
Step 2: Check your network
Double check that the mobile device, tablet, or laptop you are using to set up Chromecast is connected to the same Wi-Fi network you will connect the Chromecast to.
Step 3: Download the Google Home app
On your mobile device, tablet, or laptop, download the Google Home app Chromecast cast icon
Step 4: Set up Chromecast
Press ACCEPT in order to agree to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
Tap Devices, located in the top right corner of the screen
Tap Allow,to allow Google Home app to access the device’s location
Select the Chromecast you wish to set up. Tap Set Up then… Continue.
This will now establish a connection with your Chromecast.
If the app is unable to establish a connection, move closer to the location of the Chromecast and tap Try Again. If there is trouble reading info from the Chromecast, tap Try Again.
Press continue, when Google Home app has successfully connected to the Chromecast.
The code on your phone should match the code on your TV, the tap on I See the Code.
Change the name of your Chromecast to something personal such as ‘Dave’s Chromecast’ ‘Living Room” by deleting the default name and typing in a new name, the, tap Continue.
Select the Wi-Fi network you wish to connect to your Chromecast. To automatically fetch the password for this network on this device, tap OK. The password will automatically generate within in the password field. Note: Android L and above is required to auto fetch the password, then tap Continue. ​
You can also manually enter your password. Touch Continue.​
Chromecast will now attempt to connect to the selected Wi-Fi network.
If it fails, tap Try again.
Your Chromecast device may need an update, it will automatically begin updating and will alert you when its completed.
When the Chromecast device has connected to your Wi-Fi, tap Continue.
Step 5: Cast content
Look for this symbol to cast from your cast enabled apps.

How To Set Up Netflix

Step 1: On your mobile device go to the App Store on iPhone or Google Play on Android
Step 2: Next, Search for Netflix and download the APP
Step 3: Find the Netflix app on your home screen
Step 5: Then tap SEE THE PLANS
Step 6: Choose your plan that’s right for you then click Continue
Step 7: Enter your details, including your email address and a password you generate specifically for Netflix
Step 8: Enter you payment details and Vowla. You Are Done
Select your favourite title to play, Click play and hit that cast icon we pointed out before and select your the Chromecast you previously set up.
Now go get some popcorn and a choc top and enjoy….
